Prep 3 U8 boys enjoy Tag Rugby Tournament!

On Wednesday, the U8 boys enjoyed a great afternoon of rugby, playing against 10 other schools in the tag rugby tournament. The 'A' team did not lost a game, playing 6, winning 4 and drawing 2. The 'B' won 3 matches in a very successful afternoon. Well done boys, an excellent effort! Thanks to Mr Morley for taking the photographs.

Horrible Histories Theatre Trip

On Friday, Prep 3 went to the Hexagon Theatre in Reading to see the 'Awful Egyptians' at the theatre. We found out all about the Egyptians and saw lots of exciting things from Ancient Egypt in 3D when we were wearing our special glasses!

3L Assembly

Today we found out that adjectives are describing words andcan be useful when writing more exciting sentences. When you have finished your prep sheet, you could try this activity. Boys play their first rugby match...

To finish off the fantastic history topic that 3L and 3P have been doing with Mrs Lay, we had a mini Ancient Greek Olympics on the back lawn this morning. We threw the javelin, the discus and did long jump with weights! It was great fun and a great end to our history topic. Thank you Mr Bailey!

Today was induction for day for the whole school. The Prep 3's all found which class they will be in next year and the Prep 2 children came up to meet their new teacher. We had a great afternoon making owls which the children have brought home this evening. Have a lovely weekend!

Butterflies fly away...

The end of our science topic on life cycles saw the release of the fully grown butterflies today. We have watched them grow from tiny eggs into pupae and into butterlfies. It has been a fascinating time watching them grow. We released them onto the lavender in the Italian Garden.

Tables Grid Fun!

A really good way of revising is to use this tables grid - the same as we used in class. Can you beat your best time? Bristol Zoo

On Tuesday, Prep 3 had a fun filled day at the zoo. We spent the morning doing a workshop about vertebrates and invertebrates and then went and found all of the animals that we talked about in the afternoon!

We were also very lucky to be able to go to the Butterfly Forest where we saw all the stages of the butterfly life cycle. It was a fantastic day out!

River Trip!

We all had a great day on the river this week. We went to the River Coln to find out more abuot how the river flows. We looked at the speed of the river and the ways it can erode the river bank. We saw how man has stopped the river from eating the riverbank away too much. We also saw how we have used the power of the river to help us by building water mills. It was a great trip!

When you are writing your limericks for prep tonight, remember these important rules!

Limericks are 5 lines long.
Lines 1, 2 and 5 each have seven to ten syllables.
Lines 3 and 4 each have five to seven syllables.
The lines have an ‘a a b b a’ rhyming pattern because,

- lines 1, 2 and 5 rhyme
- lines 3 and 4 rhyme

The last word of the poem rhymes with lines 1 or 2.

Here's one I really like - can you count the syllables?

Prep 3 went to the Garden Centre last Friday to practice spending some money! We have been working hard on how to add up different amounts and work out the change. All the children were able to tell the cashier how much their drink and snack will cost and how much change they should get. An excellent morning of maths!

Theme Week 2011

Prep 3 had a fabulous theme week. 3P spent the week finding out as much as they could about China and 3L did the same for Japan. A great week was had by all. Visit to the Ashmolean Museum

On Thursday Prep 3 went to the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford to find out all about the Ancient Greeks. We were able to see and even hold some real Gerek pottery. We also saw lots of orignal marble statues and got to hold some real Ancient Greek coins! It was an excellent day out and a perfect start to our topic on Ancient Greece.

Fire engine visit!

As part of Fire Safety Week, all the children from Reception to Prep 4 were treated to a visit from the fire service on Wednesday. Mr Freebury, our groundsman, works as a firefighter too and he and the fire fighters from Fairford Fire Station showed the children around the fire engine and told us all about fire safety. If was great fun!

Prep 3 World Challenge!

Last week, Prep 3 had a fantastic day doing the first part of their World Challenge out on the back lawn.

It was a very nice day for forms 3L and 3P. My favourite game was called triangle of life. There were 3 islands, number 1 island had 3 water of bottles on it, a carrier and a rope. The 2nd island had 3 boxes of food, a carrier and a rope. The 3rd island had 3 walkie talkies on it a carrier and a rope. You had to get all of the objects to each of the islands but you had to get the walkie talkies across first because then you were allowed to talk to each other.

Today Prep 3 found out all about tutpup.com, a new anc exciting way to learn basic maths skills. We played some games and challenges against people from all over the world!

The aim of the website is to practice times tables both at home and at school in a safe environment using an element of competition! The children have a letter in their diaries which includes their username and passwords which they created today. Use these to log on and have some fun. Why not log on at the same time as your friends and play eachother?

On Thursday Prep 3 went to the River Coln to find out all about the river and its features. We went to the Ernest Cook Trust Education Centre and were taken on two walks along the river and had lunch in the sunshine. It was a wonderful day!

Butterfly Farm and Craft Centre

On Tuesday, Prep 3 visited the butterfly farm so we could find out all about the life cycle of a butterfly. We saw lots of different types of butterfly and saw all the different stages of it's life cycle. We also saw lots of other animals that they keep there, like otters and even a goat!

In the afternoon we went to 'Pop in and Paint' and painted our very own butterflies. We painted them symmetrically and they looked fantastic. It was a great trip!

Boys win in the Cricket v Wycliffe!

On Wednesday the U8 team played their first game against Wycliffe. The U8's play the 'pairs' version of cricket, where each team starts with 200 runs. 5 runs are lost for a wicket, and runs are gained by running and boundaries in the normal way.

Hatherop won the toss and chose to bat. All 12 boys played attacking cricket and scored well. Running between the wickets was excellent and we scored 8 boundaries. By the end of our innings we had only lost 2 wickets (run outs) and scored a huge total of 310.

Wycliffe's innings started well but they struggled to cope with Hatherop's very accurate bowling. We concentrated well and fielded quickly and calmly. We stopped Wycliffe from scoring any boundaries and took 5 wickets which reduced their score by 25 runs. By the end of the game, Wycliffe had only scored 50 runs, which meant we won the game by 60 runs.

A fantastic result, well done to all the team: Jonathan (c), Joshua, Luke, Jack B, Jack T, Toby, Tommy, Freddie L, Freddie S, Ben R, Adam & Ben F.

Chicks are GROWING!

The chicks are growing fast and are now much bigger! They are now spending the day out of the brooder as they are big enough to cope without the light for warmth. They go back in the brooder at night. We made a home for them from an old chest of drawers!

Literacy Day!

On Friday, the whole school enjoyed a day of literacy activities. We took turns to take part in a 'Poetry Slam', an audience with Tanya Landman, the author, and then in the afternoon we did some drama with people from Oxford Playhouse Theatre.

Chicks doing well...

Today we returned to Reception to see the chicks. There was one chick that had still not hatched out of its egg. Mr Parkin explained that there might not have been a chick inside that egg or that it might never have been fertilised. It might also have been a chick that was too ill to hatch.

All the other chicks have done really well and all their feathers are now fluffy and the chicks are all looking for food and water. We have moved them all now from the incubator to the brooder and they all seem very happy. They are already much bigger than they were yesterday.

Prep 3 and Reception watch chicks hatch!

As part of our science topic on life cycles, Prep 3 have teamed up with Reception this term to look after some chicks. On Tuesday, we took delivery of 14 eggs, an incubator and a brooder. In the first 24 hours we have seen 13 out of the 14 eggs hatch. Most of the chicks are still in the incubator but will soon be moved over to the brooder. This afternoon we will be able to pick them up and even start to feed them!

On Tuesday when Mrs Nixon Lea came into school, she discovered many of the chicks had hatched over night, but as Prep 3 arrived to visit at 8.30, we were able to watch an egg hatch and we even took a video which you can see below. An amazing sight!

Today we went to reception and saw some chicks. We went down in the morning to Mrs Nixon Lea’s classroom to see the chicks hatching. We saw a real chick pecking out of an egg. There was a machine that kept them warm like the mother hen. When they came out of the egg it was wet and tired. The feed was tiny. They were cute.

We went down to reception to look at some chicks hatching. In amazement we saw a chick hatch. The chick was very wet. We took turns to see the chick hatch. Three other chicks hatched over night but they are only a few hours old and they were all yellow and really fluffy. We enjoyed watching the chicks hatch. The egg on the right had a tiny hole in it witch meant the chick was pecking through the egg. The three chicks were put into the large incubator..

Today we went down to Reception. We looked at some chicks hatching. It was wet when it hatched out. When it comes out of its shell it is grey. They live in an incubator. When they live in the incubator they hatch. The boy ones when they are roosters. After they have crack the egg they are very tired because they have pecked so hard!

Today we went to reception to see some baby chicks be born. They where in an incubator. They were very tired out because they had bean pecking the egg to get out .We saw a chick coming out. The chick does not need any food for the first day because they have had the food in the egg. The chick is wet when it comes out of the egg. Then through the day the chick gets fluffy. Then when they are ready they go into a big box called a brooder.

Good morning Prep 3. Sorry that I am not with you but as you may know there are no aeroplanes from South Africa into Britain at the moment because of the volcano. I hope you are all following what happens, it would make some good geography work. Have a look on the atlas and you will be able to find Swaziland which is where I am staying at the moment. I hope you all had good Easter holidays and I am looking forward to seeing you all as soon as there is a plane and we can get a ticket. At the moment we have tickets for Friday. I hope the chickens are ok, perhaps you could post some photos on the blog that I could look at. See you all soon.

We are archaeologists!

In history this week, we have been archaeologists!We had to excavate the sand and unearth the pieces of Greek pottery. We were very lucky to find almost a whole Greek pot and then we put it together. It was great fun!

Thursday Times Table Fun!

As the middle school production gets into full swing, we have decided that each Thursday your prep will be an online blog prep. We hope this will be a little easier to do when you get home later than normal after rehearsals.

This week we kick off with these two games. Remember that you must focus on the tables that you are working on - don't be too ambitious - it is much easier to move on to the higher tables when you know the smaller ones really really well.

Today, we went to Bristol and it was a lot of fun. All of Prep 2 and Prep 3 went. Prep 3 were finding out about slight and shadow. Prep 2 were learning about the body. We did a workshop when we arrived and the we got to use the machines and go into the Planetarium. After that we had lunch and went to the other activities downstairs. I played in the jungle and then I went to the airport! When we got back to school the teachers gave us all goody bags!

One of the exciting new things at Explore@Bristol is an exhibition all about animation. The people who make the Wallace and Gromit movies set it up to show us how the movies are made. Hello Prep 3, we hope you all had a great Christmas holiday! If you are at home and can't get to school today you can try some of the things here to keep you busy!

First of all (and definitely the most important!) is to build a snowman! The bigger the better - who can build one bigger than themselves??? Take a picture and bring it in to school and we can put them on the Prep 3 noticeboard...

Prep School Challenge!

Prep 3 had a wonderful day today as they started their annual 'World Challenge' activity. In Prep 3, the activities take place over one day and aim to encourage team work and thinking skills. The children worked well in their teams to achieve the tasks and had a huge amount of fun.

Walk like an Egyptian!

Today a theatre company cam into school to tell all the Prep 3 (and 4 and 6!) children all about different periods in history. Prep 3 found out all about the Egyptians as part of their new history topic. It was great fun... take a look at the video to see more!

First Day Back!

Today we welcomed everyone back to school after a long and relaxing summer break... The children were all very excited to get going in their new classes and spent lots of time finding out about whats new in Prep 3. We've spent some time in our classrooms getting to know what we will be doing this year and all of us have been to the Art Studio for our Tuesday afternoon Art lesson with Mrs Lay and Mrs Easterbrook. 3L have done some ICT with Mr Parkin and 3P have started their History topic with Mrs Lay.

We have even found some time to get our first set of spellings to learn and found out our handwriting prep for this evening! What a busy day... I think we'll all sleep well tonight.... (teachers too..!)

Welcome to the new Prep 3!

On Friday, the children from Prep 2 came to visit to see what's in store for September when they move up to the main school and become Prep 3!

Both classes worked together to make dreamcatchers and we also had time to go and visit the ICT suite to take a look at this blog.

The children had a great time and can't wait for September!

Prep 3 French Assembly

French 3 recently did their French Assembly. It was about food and healthy eating. It was a story about Mr Greedy (M. Glouton) who could not stop eating! Then he got a stomach ache so he went to the doctor (le medecin) to see what was wrong with him. It was great fun!

River Trip!

On Thursday 17th June 2009 ,Prep 3 went to the River Coln. Out teacher for the day was called Mrs Newman. First we went on a long walk wherewe looked at the river and everything that was growing around it. We saw the river bank and the river bed. We even saw some wasps but they didn't hang around for long.

After the walk, we had lunch and then we weere given a clipboard and a pencil. We went to the small stream and measured its depth, its width and its temperature. We also measured how fast the water was flowing by dropping an orange in it. It took 1m 22s to travel 10 metres.

Then we went to a different part of the river called a meander. We did our measurements again and saw the water going faster at one side. We drew the meander too and played with Mrs Newman's dog who was in the water when we were finished!
